Pet ownership was
once banned in China during the Communist heydays, but is fast becoming popular again as
the country opens up and disposable income increases, though raising birds has been a
popular pastime in China since imperial times.
Birds Need Light for Optimum Health
All bird owners know that their birds, like all animals, need fresh air, proper
food and a constant supply of clean water in order to survive and thrive. But not everyone
knows that, for optimum health, birds need light as well.
Although animals are dependent on light to some extent, birds are particularly
sensitive to it. Birds deprived of sunlight may develop a variety of problems, including
poor nutrient absorption, vitamin D deficiency, feather plucking, and disruption of mating
and breeding patterns.
You might think that placing your bird's cage near a window or other light
source would be enough to cure the problem. However, since some glass can act as a filter
and reflects instead of transmitting certain portions of the spectrum, birds still suffers
from light deficiency.
But that doesn't mean you should place your bird in direct sunlight without
access to shade. This could cause your bird to overheat. |
