• Greenies ® contain only 4 % fat and have a caloric density of 3.1 kcal ME/g (which is similar to that found in "light" or "weight maintenance" dog foods). AAFCO guidelines allow pet food/treat manufacturers to claim "lean" or "low fat" if products contain no more than 9% crude fat (for products like Greenies® which contain less than 20% moisture).

• Greenies ® contain only 0.58% (DM) sodium on a per serving basis. Commercially prepared pet foods range from a minimum (required) of 0.06% DM sodium to 0.80%. High levels of sodium have adverse effects on palatability - which obviously is not the case with Greenies ® !

• Greenies ® are not intended to be complete and balanced and therefore, should not constitute more than 10% of a dog’s daily caloric intake. The NRC (National Research Council) recommendation for protein adequate for adult maintenance is a minimum of 18% crude protein. There is no maximum intake level for protein or amino acids established for dogs. There has never been sufficient data available to demonstrate detrimental effects of high protein intake in a normal animal. Greenies ® are an excellent choice for diabetic dogs and dogs fed the new, low carb reducing diets because of Greenies® high protein, low carbohydrate and no sugar content. If necessary, a regular diet can be reduced by 7-10% to account for the calories in Greenies ® .
